Greek language, music & culture
I’m Katerina, a Greek language teacher and singer based in Thessaloniki. I’ve been teaching Greek to students from around the world since 2016, with an academic background in Modern Greek and Sociology. Alongside teaching, I sing rebetiko and laiko music and explore the connections between Greek language, music, culture and everyday life.
Learn Greek with me
I teach Modern Greek online to teenage students and adults of all levels, from complete beginners to advanced learners. My lessons are conversational, supportive and adapted to your goals, interests and way of learning. We work towards helping you communicate with greater confidence and ease, while discovering more of the culture and everyday life behind the language. For me, learning Greek is about more than studying grammar and vocabulary. It can also be a way of connecting with people, places, culture and the parts of Greece that matter to you.
Music, culture & everyday life
I’ve always been an avid music listener, across many different genres, and in recent years I’ve also had the chance to experience music as a performer. I’m especially interested in the stories behind the music and in what songs can reveal about culture, identity and history. I’m beginning to write about these ideas on Substack, alongside reflections on Greek culture and everyday life from my own perspective and experience.
A little about me
I was born and raised in Thessaloniki, where I studied Greek Language and Literature at Aristotle University. I later moved to Germany, where I completed an MA in Sociology at LMU Munich. For the past 10 years, I’ve been teaching Greek to people of different ages, backgrounds and levels, both at language institutes and as a private teacher. During my years in Germany, I trained in adult language education, earning the Eurolta Certificate, and taught at adult education centres (Volkshochschulen) in Bavaria. My experience also includes working with teenage students in Greece, teaching Greek Language and Writing, Literature and Sociology. Living and working in different cultural and educational environments has shaped the way I approach both language teaching and cultural topics—with curiosity, respect and an openness to different perspectives. Outside of teaching, I enjoy music, reading, writing and cooking.
